While I can't solve all of the problems, I want to see a Spartanburg where everyone's problems are as silly and annoying as those whose families have been able to build and grow wealth for generations. My dream world would be where the problems in Highland are the same as those in Converse Heights - neighborhood squabbles over alleyways and who parks where, and not cycles of poverty that result in stymied potential, wasted resources, addiction, pain, depression etc. If at the end of my career/life I can look back and see that my work has helped lay the groundwork for others to climb higher, or that by my presence and participation I have enabled others to have a seat at the table, or contributed something positive to those underserved communities to where they are empowered by their own accord, then I'll have done my job. That extends to making connections for others, providing input in meetings that might not otherwise be mentioned without a minority at the table, and putting my time and resources towards efforts that serve traditionally neglected communities in Spartanburg. My greatest desire is to find a way to open doors for others to have their voices heard, and if that is not possible, then to be their voice where doors have opened for me. While my everyday role is to guide growth in the City, both in terms of type and location through administration of the zoning ordinance, and working with developers and applicants to help them maneuver the public processes required, my hope in serving Spartanburg is not limited to commercial growth. The Pipeline Project, a OneSpartanburg Vision Plan initiative funded by the Duke Energy Foundation, promotes broader and more diverse membership on area boards in order to create new champions for Spartanburg County that reflect its diversity.
